Lyme disease

* “The Widening Circle : A Lyme Disease Pioneer Tells Her Story” by Polly Murray (300 pages) Polly Murray started the process of the discovery of Lyme disease in Connecticut by her persistence in the pursuit of the truth about the disease affecting her family and others.

“Cure Unknown” Inside the Lyme Epidemic by Pamela Weintraub. "Living with Lyme gave Weintraub both the insight and the dogged ambition to find out some truths ... rather than remaining stuck at the pro-Lyme, anti-Lyme controversy.

* “Coping With Lyme Disease” (Coping) by Karen Donnelly (100 pages)  a brief guide to Lyme disease, fairly complete for an introduction to the subject.

* “Everything You Need to Know About Lyme Disease” (Need to Know Library) by Karen Donnelly  (60 pages)  A shorter, easy to read introduction to the subject.

“Coping With Lyme Disease : A Practical Guide to Dealing With Diagnosis and Treatment” by Denise Lang, Denise V. Lant, Joseph Territo M. D. (Contributor)  [[Review] by Dr. Deborah S. Kliman, Ed.D. Psychologist & victim of Lyme, babesiosis and ehrlichiosis.]

“Everything You Need to Know About Lyme Disease and Other Tick-Borne Disorders” by Karen Vanderhoof-Forschner, Joseph I. Lieberman (Afterword), William Burgdorfer

Both Lang’s and Forschner’s books are more complete treatises on Lyme disease. Both worth reading, but some information may be dated.

* “Biography of a Germ” by Arno Karlen, Julie Doughty (Editor) (170 pages) This book by Karlen will reinforce what “Lymies” know about the disease and will frighten those of you who have not met this scary bacterium.

Related Topics

* “Parasite Rex : Inside the Bizarre World of Nature's Most Dangerous Creatures” by Carl Zimmer (300 pages) Zimmer’s book will astonish you with the control that infectious microbes can have over people, animals and insects.  Most astounding are the bizarre behaviors induced in the hosts by specific parasites. This is scary fact filled book, not fantasy.

* “Plague Time : The New Germ Theory of Disease” by Paul W. Ewald (250 pages) Ewald proposes that all of our ills are the result of microbiologically induced disease. This scary view of our battle with microbes is certain to open your eyes to the possibility of his hypothesis and perhaps help direct you towards a solution to some of your health problems.

* “Severed Trust: Why American Medicine Hasn't Been Fixed--and What We Can Do About It” by George D. Lundberg, et al (300 pages)  The title says it all. He does offer some ways to fix the system, but we may have to wait a long time before reform can be instituted, if ever.  [top]
